Animal Alliance Awarded a
Challenge Grant: Coco ’s Fund

Coco’s Fund was inspired by a collaborative effort to facilitate the adoption of “Betty,” a Chihuahua rescued by Animal Alliance, fostered by animal welfare advocate Carolyn Saligman and ultimately adopted by her brother and his family who were smitten by their first meeting with the 4-year-old Chihuahua. According to Carolyn, “Betty charmed her way into all of our hearts. She started me thinking about doing something to honor the awesome work of Anne Trinkle and Animal Alliance for routinely saving the lives of so many amazing animals.”

Betty was abandoned on a frigid day in December in a box outside the shelter, malnourished, infested with fleas and suffering from a dental infection. Once in the care of Animal Alliance, Betty was spayed and had a dental cleaning with extraction of the diseased teeth. In foster care, she had time to re-grow the hair lost from long-term flea infection and to gain a pound on her little 6-pound frame.

Anne Trinkle, the founder of Animal Alliance, says, “Betty is just like the 400 dogs and 100 cats we rescue each year from various shelters. All would have otherwise been euthanized due to their age, injury, or infirmity, or simply due to shelter overcrowding. Nearly all the animals we take into our care require some kind of medical care in addition to the routine vaccinations and mandatory pre-adoption spay/neuter.

”Many of the animals we take in have catastrophic injuries due to abuse, neglect, or accidental injury prior to arrival at the shelter. These animals require specialty surgeries and hospitalization in order to recover and be adopted by loving families.

”Coco’s Fund is a tribute to one dog, but in fact, will help save the lives of hundreds of animals each year. Animal Alliance is enormously grateful to Carolyn Saligman for her generosity. The legacy of her kindness is the happy lives of the animals as well as the families who adopt them.”

Coco’s Fund is named for a special Chihuahua of the same name. The purpose of the challenge portion of the grant is to engage the community in raising funds for Animal Alliance. Donors will know that their contribution is being matched dollar for dollar and that the funds will be used exclusively for the medical care of animals in need. Donations are fully tax deductible and may be mailed to: Animal Alliance, Box 1285, Belle Mead, NJ 08502.

Animal Alliance, a 501(c)3 nonprofit charitable organization, is a volunteer organization that rescues animals in immediate danger of euthanasia from several animal shelters. Animal Alliance places animals removed from the shelters into foster homes where they are rehabilitated, spayed/neutered, restored to health, and readied for a speedy adoption to carefully chosen adoptive families. Animal Alliance finds euthanasia to be an unacceptable fate for adoptable animals, and strives to educate the public about the surplus of adoptable animals in shelters, the critical importance of spay/neuter, and responsible pet ownership.

Carolyn Saligman, Ph.D., is a psychotherapist and behavioral health consultant. A lifelong animal lover with 5 rescued cats of her own, Carolyn has engaged in animal welfare work for many years. She has spearheaded various animal welfare projects in Philadelphia; improving the comfort of animals while in the shelter through specialized housing, increasing adoptions through community programs, and spaying/neutering of feral cats through trap/neuter/return clinics. Most recently, Carolyn’s funding created a mobile spay/neuter clinic initiative for low income inner city pet owners which resulted in over 1,500 animals being altered in just over a year.
